Today I feel greatly honored to speak on behalf of Professor Marianne Grunberg-Manago, the current Chairman of the International Federation of Biochemistry (IUB), and on behalf of the IUB Executive Board to make an opening address to the International Biochemistry Conference in Beijing. And their colleagues, congratulating you on having convened this meeting in China that involves many areas of biochemistry, and at this very moment I can not help thinking of my first visit to Beijing more than eight years ago when China was in the process of recovery from the turmoil.
