This book chronicles the French modern paintings of the Hermitage collection from the pre-Impressionist period until the founding of the Art Nouveau pre-World War ten. The paintings come mainly from two prominent Moscow connoisseurs and collectors, Ivan Abraham-Vich Morozov and Segu Ivanovich Xichukin (Serg-ei Ivanovich Shchukin). Although the work of these two individuals can not be overestimated, it does attract the attention of experts. When the new painting just came out in France, so far away in Moscow, the best works of French contemporary artists were prevalent, and these artists later became the number one masters of European painting in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. We can not explain why the collection of these two individuals is so outstanding in quantity and quality that envy the collectors of France and other countries. The answer can only be found in the history of collection. It was a fiery era, and especially the first 15 years of this century was a period of exploring new concepts and techniques of artistic expression, marking a brand new stage in the history of art. Today, when we are
