模树石,因似树木的影像而得名,是我国发现和利用较早的一种观赏石,其别名很多,诸如松石、松屏石、醒酒石、龙骨石画、假化石、柏枝玛瑙、柏子玛瑙、松枝水晶、苔纹蛋白石、树木冰洲石等等。关于模树石在我国古代早有记载,唐武宗(公元841—847)时的宰相、著名藏石家李德裕有块醒酒石,以水浇之则显现出林木葱郁的景象,当属模树石类。元末杨瑀《山居新话》记载:“至正七年(公元1347),杜稷署太祝张从善尝预营寿室,解石板为穴门,石中忽有纹成松形,虽绘画者不如也。”清代赵希鹄《研屏辨》称:“蜀中有石,解开自然有小松形,或三五十株,行列成径,描画所不及。又松止高二寸,正堪作研屏。”《四川总志·石谱》有“松屏石”条目:“涪州松屏山翠耸云霄,其山上产石。有纹如松形。”
