Choroidal neovascularization (CNV) is a major cause of the formation of wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and its loss of vision. Although the exact mechanism of CNV formation is poorly understood at present, the most reliable theory is that vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is one of the important factors leading to CNV formation. Therefore, a variety of anti-VEGF drugs have been used in the field of ophthalmology, they can inhibit the formation of CNV and can reduce vascular leakage, thus showing superior to traditional therapies efficacy. Now the United States FDA approved a variety of anti-VEGF drugs and other research and development of VEGF inhibitor mechanism of action and efficacy are summarized.
