New Zealand Department of Energy said in a statement on April 1, 2008 that it has signed an oil reserve agreement with the Netherlands and will be granted some of the emergency oil reserves in the Netherlands according to the agreement. New Zealand, a member of the International Energy Agency, requires a minimum oil reserve equivalent to the country’s net imports of 90 days a year in the previous year. Based on this calculation, New Zealand’s minimum oil reserve should be 1.2 million tons, or about 8.76 million barrels.
