船龄为35年的“萨拉姆98”号于2006年2月3日晨沉没于距埃及港口萨法加港57英里的红海海域,重演“泰坦尼克”号沉船悲剧。据悉,当时船上载有1310名乘客,另外还有约100名船员。截至2月13日,埃及交通部长曼苏尔发表声明说,在此次沉船事件中,387人幸免于难,411具遇难者尸体被找到,仍有611人失踪。据部分生还者披露.客轮下沉前曾发生过火灾。埃及议会2月12日组成了一个由25名来自各政治派别的代表参加的调查委员会,对沉船事件进行调查。据初步调查结果显示,船舱起火和气候条件恶劣是导致客轮沉没的主要原因。
The 35-year-old Salam 98 sunk in the Red Sea near the port of Safaga, Egypt’s port, on the morning of February 3, 2006, repeating the tragedy of the Titanic shipwreck. It is reported that when the boat carrying 1310 passengers, in addition to about 100 crew members. As of February 13, Egyptian Minister of Transport Mansour issued a statement saying that 387 people survived the shipwreck and that 411 bodies of the victims were found and 611 people were still missing. According to some survivors, a fire broke out before the passenger ship sunk. On December 12, the Egyptian Parliament formed a commission of inquiry, consisting of 25 representatives from all political parties, to investigate the sinking incident. According to preliminary findings, the main cause of sinking of the passenger ferry is the fire in the hold and the harsh climatic conditions.
