Green PC - Feasible Practices and Choices Although each consumes a few tens of watts, it has become a major energy consumer because of the sheer volume. For example, the United States now has about 60 million computers and its power consumption accounts for 5% of commercial electricity consumption. This makes the Environmental Protection Agency of the United States have to push forward the “Energy Star” program to save energy on computers and make a green revolution in computers. The Clinton administration also stipulates that U.S. government agencies can only purchase green computers. With the advent of a large number of computers, the pollution of the environment has drawn the attention of global environmental organizations and the annual funds spent on computer wastes are enormous. It is estimated that by 2005 there will be 150 million computers to be scrapped. The wastes pile up like a 3.5-acre hill with an acre of land and will cost more than 1 billion U.S. dollars.
