On May 25, 2015, the American documentary photographer Mary Ellen Mark (1940-2015) passed away in New York City suffering from myelodysplastic syndrome at the age of 75. Mary was born in 1940 in Philadelphia, USA, received a master’s degree in journalism photography from the University of Pennsylvania in 1964, and entered the field of career photography in 1967. In 1975 Mary entered the Oregon state hospital for female psychiatrists while filming the stills for the Hollywood classic “Flight To The Asylum,” where the marginalized little man touched her heart.
