Huang Hongming, board chairman of Jieyang, Guangdong-based Comhope Group, was detained as a criminal on November 14 for his offering bribes to Chen Hongping, former Party chief of Jieyang. The latter was removed from his posts and arrested in June 2013.
Huang Hongming, 46, came from Chaoyang, Shantou, Guangdong. He was the founder of Comhope Group. In September, he was listed as the 39th richest real estate tycoon in China with the net assets of 8.4 billion yuan, four places higher than his ranking a year before. In addition, he was eight years younger than the average age of tycoons in the list.
Previously, Chen Hongping as revealed to accept bribes from businessmen many times and provide them with access to interest in return. Chen was the leader of Rongcheng District, Jieyang from 1994 to 1998. Then he gradually moved up through his career line till he became the mayor of Jieyang in 2005 and then the Party chief of this city three years later. In October 2011, he was moved from Jieyang, where he worked for 36 years, to the provincial government of Guangdong, taking charge of the agricultural business.
Chen and Huang Hongming were the members of the 11th National People’s Congress(NPC) of China. When Chen’s corruption was revealed, he lost his NPC membership along with Huang.
Comhope Group was put under heavy scrutiny since its board chairman was arrested. Wang Shouqing, president of Comhope Group, said that the operation of the company remained undisturbed. Huang’s involvement in crime was the personal affair of the board chairman and had no influence over the operation of the entire company.
