This paper describes the characteristics of nonmetallic inclusions observed in a low carbon steel sandwich and analyzes the source of the interlayer. Metallographic examination combined with X-ray identification results indicate that the silicate intercalation is roughly the same as the mineral composition of the clay refractory material that has been attacked by the molten steel, mainly mullite (3Al 2 O 3 .2SiO 2) and cristobalite. According to the steel production process, the characteristics of inclusions and the change of the chemical composition of the clay refractory material after being eroded by molten steel, it is considered that the source of the silicate sandwiched layer may be related to clay or MnO · FeO in molten steel attacking the clay refractory material. This analysis has been theoretically explained.
