Biphasic insulin release was first observed in vitro and in humans more than 20 years ago. The first phase is a fast, sustained stimulus response characterized by rate-sensitive transient insulin release. The second phase is 1 to 2 hours after the first phase, and the progressive increase in insulin release lasts 1 to 2 hours. With the passage of time, researchers have deepened their understanding of the significance of biphasic secretion in normal people and diabetics. It is considered that the first phase is directly proportional to the rate of change of glucose concentration and is quite important for the regulation of hepatic glucose excretion.
