In late 1993, the RIRI planned to start using fiber optic LANs on trains attached to Japan’s Ministry of Railways (JR). Currently, JR trains are equipped with three separate communication systems: (1) for driver monitoring of vehicle speed, air conditioning and doors, etc.); (2) for ticketing and guarding; (3) for various services Passenger broadcast, etc.). For example, for control purposes only, each Shinkansen train requires a long cable of more than 200 trains. The new optical fiber LAN under development can increase the traffic volume of each train and at the same time reduce the weight. The novel optical LAN is expected to reduce the weight of a 10-car train by about 500kg.
