Objective: To study the effects of Scutellaria Barbata flavonoids (SBF) on blood lipid in ovariectomized rats. Methods: The female ovariectomized rats were used to simulate the reduction of serum estrogen level and the abnormal changes of a series of metabolites in postmenopausal women. The effects of Scutellaria barbata flavonoids on triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC) (HDL-C), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), atherosclerosis index (AI = LDL-C / HDL-C) and coronary heart index (R-CHD = TC / HDL- C); combined with estrogen as a positive control drug. Results: Compared with the sham-operated group, ovariectomized rats had dyslipidemia, serum TG and LDL-C levels and cardiovascular risk factors AI and R-CHD significantly increased (P <0.05, P <0.01) , HDL-C content was significantly lower (P <0.01), although the total cholesterol increased but not statistically significant. SBF can improve the disorder of blood lipid metabolism in ovariectomized rats, and the levels of TG and HDL-C in serum of 17.5,35,70 mg.kg-1.d-1 for 5 weeks decreased significantly (P < 0.05, P <0.01), AI and R-CHD also decreased significantly (P <0.01), and had different regulation on serum TC and LDL-C, but not statistically significant. Positive control drugs combined with estrogen on all the test indicators have a positive regulatory effect. Conclusion: Scutellaria barbata flavonoids can improve dyslipidemia in ovariectomized rats and have a certain therapeutic effect on atherosclerosis.
