Since the scientists first discovered AIDS in 1981, the disease has rapidly spread in the world. In just 10 years, from developed Europe and the United States to developing countries, AIDS is almost everywhere threatened and new cases occur every year. WHO May 21, 1993 Disclosure: It is estimated that 14 million people are infected with HIV globally and it is estimated that 30 million to 40 million people will become infected with HIV by the year 2000. Most of these belong to developing countries. WHO statistics also show that three-fourths of those infected are caused by unhealthy sexual behaviors. Currently, the most affected area is sub-Saharan Africa, where more than 8 million people are infected with HIV. This statistic also counts only one sixth of the total population infected with endemic areas. Most alarming is that in South and Southeast Asia, HIV is developing in these two regions at a rate almost as fast as 10 years ago in the Sahara region of Africa. According to the WHO, between 1 million and 1.5 million adults in South and Southeast Asia are already infected with the AIDS virus, and two of the countries most affected are India and Thailand. In other areas, the situation is also worrying. Latin America and the Caribbean; some countries in the Middle East and North Africa; and Eastern Europe and Central Asia; are all affected to varying degrees by the AIDS pandemic.
