The Symposium, held at the end of 1997, was sponsored by the Architectural Society of China and Jiangmen Municipal Government, Guangdong Province. Over 20 architectural experts and scholars and over 50 officials and technical staff from Guangdong and other parts of the country attended the meeting.Jiangmen has over three million overseas Chinese and Hong Kong and Macao compatriots. Since the Opium War, as an open harbor, Jiangmen has been very much influenced by foreign commerce and economy. Its architecture has witnessed much Western influence as well. The large - scale exodus and the consequential life abroad have brought foreign advanced production tools and technology back to Jiangmen. The peculiar humanitarian geography has produced in Jiangmen an architectural style combining the merits of Eastern and Western cultures.The most typical are the “Arcade Streets” and the “Chateau Chamber”. These buildings are well - preserved because they are of a brick and stone structure built in the current times.One problem in modern urban construction that Jiangmen and other Chinese cities are faced with is how to absorb and develop the local architectural tradition. After visiting some local blocks and buildings, participants at the meeting held discussions on the issue and reached the following consensus: 1) Inheritance from tradition should not be restricted to form; the focus must be placed on absorption of the merits of traditional architecture,i. e. bold blending of Chinese and Western styles and skills in full consideration of natural and climate conditions etc.. 2) Pay attention to the absorption of the merits of traditional architecture in modern urban construction while trying to meet the demands of social development by making use of new technologies. This is a hard, explorative process. Experts have made many specific suggestions too.
