1948年初,中央研究院代理院长朱家骅发来《通知当选为本院院士》的公函,邀请父亲任该院院士。父亲允诺。中央研究院定于九月廿三日召开第一次院士大会,为期三天。父亲决定廿二日乘火车前往,命我陪同。我即向银行请假,这样新华银行南京分行亦得悉此事,当天分行经理亲自驾车到站相迎,安排我们住银行招待所。晚间,父亲在招待所起草演讲稿。这一夜,床上有臭虫,因而我们都没有睡好。第二天一早不得不迁居到新街口商务印书馆南京分馆。新街口是南京的商业中心,分馆系老式街面房屋,第一进是营业厅,第二进是书库膳厅,楼上是卧房。商务分馆经理王诚章和同仁们热情接待,把我们迎至二楼卧房下榻,房间宽畅舒适。
