In the Sahara desert, intense sunlight will make the temperature up to 40 degrees centigrade, but scientists are surprised to find that asilver ant likes to come out for food at the hottest time of the Sahara desert. Why is this kind of ant able to withstand such a high temperature? It turned out that the silver ants have mini fur on their backs which can reflect the vast majority of the exposure of heat, so that the body temperature can be cooled down.
Quentin Virot, a doctorate student from Free University of Belgium, pointed out that the back hair of the ant has flat equilateral triangular cross-section. Each hair on both sides is corrugated folds, and on the other side is flat for ant body that can reflect most of the light. The sunlightis refracted through its hair surface, and get reflect to get out of the triangle section, which will eventually escape through the third contact surface, so that the body of the ant can be cooling.
