西方人认识西藏的历史始于神话传说时代。16世纪之前的西方世界对西藏的历史、文化和宗教几乎一无所知,关于西藏形象的描述不多且较为零散,但关于西藏约翰长老、黄金之地、食人部落、性风俗、巫术等充满异域情调的描述却深入人心,特别是盛产黄金以及有基督徒存在的说法,使得西方人对西藏产生了一种狂热的梦想以及揭开西藏真实面目的强烈欲望。同时,欧洲早期的西藏形象为后来的神秘化和理想化的西藏形象埋下了伏笔。
