Stable rearrangements of chromosomes have been observed in animals who had been exposed to phosphine, general food fumigants and fumigants who had been exposed to both phosphine and other pesticides from 6 weeks to 3 months ago. This translocation first appeared in G-loop lymphocytes. Less stable variants, including chromosomal deletions and chromosomal gaps, only increased significantly during the season of application, but not later. During the fumigation, the measured space of phosphine exceeds the national standard. Because phosphine is also used in chip processing and can be generated in waste disposal, the potential for wider exposure to it and long-term health effects must be considered.
