Background It is believed that blood donated by people who are familiar with the patient is blood-safer than blood banks, and most U.S. blood stations carry out designated blood supply. There is little data to support the nomination of blood to improve safety, but instead data indicate a higher prevalence of the virus in designated blood donations. Methods Based on donor blood donations and experimental records of donated whole blood (WB) from five major blood centers in the United States, the authors compared yearly annual rates of designated and general WB (1991-1998) with the demographics of these donors Serological prevalence of infectious disease markers. The results were from 1991 to 1998 in five blood samples
