Rafcadio Herné, a famous Japanese-English writer, went to Japan in 1890 and joined Japanese nationality in 1896, renamed Koizumi Yakumo and died in Japan in 1904. During the period of intense collision between the traditional Japanese oriental civilization and the modern Western civilization, the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War of 1894 further accelerated the pace of Japanese modernization. In response, Hearn published many editorials in KIO. Through the interpretation of these editorials, combined with the description of the war in his literary works, Hearn’s concept of civilization and the concept of war can be glimpsed.
