July 1, the EU formally came into effect on the Iranian oil embargo. Some media reports said Iran’s oil output in June was 3.2 million barrels of oil per day, its lowest level since early 1992, even lower than its lowest level in 1999 - when OPEC members cut their output sharply that year to support the oil price drop To 10 dollars a barrel or less. However, the situation in Iran seems even more severe this time. The embargo was not implemented in half a month. Data show that its oil output has dropped further than in June. Shipping numbers show a surprisingly low number of tankers leaving Halk Island, Iran’s main oil export terminal. Data for the first three weeks of July showed that Iran’s oil exports in July dropped to about 1.1 million barrels to 1.3 million barrels a day. Iran’s refining capacity is 1.6 million barrels per day. This shows that Iran’s oil output may drop below 3 million barrels a day, the first time since the late 1980s.
