化妆,就是运用外来手段改变原来的面部颜色、形状和感官的一门艺术。演员化妆就是要修饰容貌,使头部的发型头饰、面部的五官特征趋向鲜明、美化,追求艺术性的惊艳唯美、靓丽典型。化妆同时也通过整体的装扮、改扮、假扮,起到“伪装”的作用。综观戏曲传统戏、现代戏、话剧和影视剧的化妆,它们在夸张、装饰、美化的程度上各有不同的表现特征,但总体的造型美学原理和审美欣赏原则是相通的。
