IntroductionrnGastric cancer is still a major health problem and a leading cause of cancer mortality despite the worldwide decline in incidence.(1-3) Surgery is the only potentially curative treatment for localized gastric cancer and radical gastrectomy with extended lymphadenectomy is now recognized as a reasonably safe procedure in experienced centers.(4,5) Adenocarcinoma (ADC)represents 95% of the total number of gastric malignancies.(6) Two histologic classifications are commonly used to describe gastric ADC.The Lauren classification primarily differentiates between “intestinal” and “diffuse” types. The intestinal type corresponds to well-differentiated tubular or villous ADC,whereas the diffuse type corresponds to less differentiated and more infiltrative ADC,including signet ring cell carcinoma (SRC).(6,7) The incidence of SRC is increasing, especially in Western countries.Considering its infiltrating character and lack of clinical symptoms,SRC is often discovered at an advanced stage and seems to be,consequently, associated with poor prognosis.
