Epidermal growth factor (EGF), a peptide hormone extracted from the submandibular gland of adult male rats, acts on the ectodermal tissue. Stimulates the growth of epithelial cells in vivo; stimulates the uptake of protein precursors, synthesis of RNA and DNA in test tubes; enhances the healing of experimental corneal epithelial wounds and has been demonstrated in human corneal epithelium and epidermal cultures. But the clinical role has not been studied. This article reports the clinical observation of 104 cases of corneal disease. Cases include: (1) corneal abrasions and superficial epithelial lesions; (2) septic corneal ulcers with or without a very slight physical invasion; (3) corneal epithelial burns (physical and / or chemical); 4) Decortication of the conjunctival epithelial tumor; 5) Herpes simplex keratoderma; 6) Bullous meta-herpetic keratopathies; and 7) Corneal plexitis.
