The pyramids on the west bank of the Nile were built by the pha-raohs as royal tombs and dates from about 3,000 B.C. The most cele-brated are those at Giza, of which the largest is the one that housedthe pharaoh known as Cheops. This is now called the Great Pyramid.Some years ago it was visited by a Frenchman named Bovis, who tookshelter from the midday sun in the pharaoh’s chamber, which is situat-
