Cylinder liner radiotracer (thin-layer activation method), modified by the Harwell Laboratory at the British Institute of Atomic Energy, can measure minute engine wear very accurately. The selected active layer depth on the liner is typically 50 microns and is controlled by tandem electrostatic accelerators within a limited range of radioactivity. The surface-activated six-cylinder engine is mounted on a Rover 2600 sedan. In order to carry out regular testing according to the required procedures, special testing techniques are used. During the test, a probe is inserted into the plug hole of the spark plug, a scintillation counter responds to the radiation, and the radiation intensity is converted into a metal abrasion amount. The probe does not need to touch the cylinder wall when testing. After 19,000 km road test, the engine disintegration, with a common dial gauge to check the cylinder liner wear and tear.
