缺血性视神经病变在1975年Hayreh氏发表专著前的文献中有16个不同的命名,这也就恰反映出学者们对本病各有一定的见解与片面顾名可知本病是视神经的缺血性营养不良性病变,也就意味着视神经饿死或饿垮,因为缺血可急可慢,可轻可重,故主客观症征亦不尽同,其筛板前的急性缺血缺氧,即呈视神经乳头水肿像,但若缺血是在筛板后,则呈球后视神经炎的症征,当然尔后有可能遗有视神经萎缩,故可做如下的分类:
