贵州省黔东南苗族侗族自治州从江县,位于丛山峻岭之中,田少山多,耕地面积还不到全部土地的百分之五.从江县所属的下江人民公社平江口生产队,座落在都柳江的南岸,前面是滚滚奔流的河水,后面是陡峻的高山.解放前,这里只有六十二亩阳山冶水田,间杂着十来亩零星小块土地,前面紧挨河边是一片芦苇和砂荒,两丈多深的芦苇丛中,经常有国民党土匪窝藏其中拦劫行人;后面深山老林里经常有虎豹出没,威胁着当地农民生产.当时,曾经流传着一首歌谣描述这里的苦情:
