江南银币于光绪二十三年(1897)底在简称宁厂的“江南铸造银元制钱总局”开铸。形制与他省通行的龙洋相同,正面除中心满文外全部为汉字,无外文(彩页1图1)。次年改版,加注戊戌干支纪年,尔后所造江南光绪银元皆援例办理。然而辛丑年(1901)时,却多出一种加上英文字HAH(彩页1图2)。按民国四年(1915)宁厂报告书的官方说法,目的是“取信中外”。江南银币若成色分量精准、货真价实,何需在通行三年后多此一举,有无言外之意?文献记载的字里行间中,有蛛丝马迹可寻。
