After years of research, Yuan Yishu, an associate researcher at the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, found that the three largest surnames in the country are Li, Wang and Zhang, accounting for 7.9%, 7.4% and 7.1% of the total population respectively. The total population of the three major surnames is 270 million, the largest three surnames in the world.
