西方文化是人文主义、东方文化是自然主义的这种看法显然是受了人文主义、自然主义概念的影响,容易产生混乱。人类的文化,不管是属于东方或西方,只有通过人才能存在。17世纪以前,西方美术史几乎所有名作都是人物画。与之相对的,东方则是山水画,在唐朝就相当发达了。以后,风景、花鸟的名作颇丰。但是,西方是客观地观察对象,而东方则采取客观捕捉的态度,这是很明显的。芭蕉说:“静观则万物皆能自得。”
