雷锋是一名孤儿,解放后,在党和政府的关怀下入学读书。参加工作后,多次当选为劳动模范。他1960年参军,两年多的时间里,立功三次,还被评为模范共青团员和节约标兵。1962年8月15日因公殉职。1963年3月5日,《人民日报》等发表了毛泽东的题词“向雷锋同志学习”。随后,刘少奇、周恩来、朱德、邓小平等中央领导人分别题词,号召全国人民学习雷锋的共产主义精神。从此,学习雷锋的活动在全国展开,“向雷锋同志学习”逐渐成为树立社会主义新风尚的动员口号。
