达斡尔人主要信仰萨满教。达斡尔人勒坛噶塔所著《达斡尔蒙古考》中述:“达斡尔蒙古虽信喇嘛,然又奉亦都罕,盍亦都罕即元之勃额教也。”该民族中没有一个喇嘛僧者,也没有建造一座喇嘛庙,而亦都罕则活跃于他们的社会之中。亦都罕与孛额之称谓,《华夷译语》中述:“师公曰孛额,师婆曰亦都罕。由此观之,孛额及亦都罕,乃系一教之师。”达斡尔人则不分男女,统称之为亦都罕。亦都罕是达斡尔人信仰的中心,它与鄂图士、巴里士、巴日清、巴格齐等统称萨满,为原始宗教的司祭者。萨满介存于人与神,神与精灵,精灵与人之间,有某种精灵支持他,同时又借助于他,从命于他,基于他的命令与人类沟通。萨满在与精灵沟通时,施展的是咒
