Fjschetti, Rockefeller University, USA, has developed a new treatment that will prevent middle ear infections. The researchers reported that mice were protected from the middle ear after receiving nasal sprays containing cytolysin (a phage protein). This method can prevent secondary ear infections in children with influenza or upper respiratory tract infections and may replace traditional antibiotics. Normally, S. pneumoniae, which causes middle ear infection, is present in the nasal mucosa.
