历代曲学均以元曲研究为核心,事实上已形成了“元曲学”这一专学。朱权承前启后,首开明代元曲学。他把元代散曲、杂剧放到“乐府”的框架中进行观照,并对元曲的渊源与盛衰作一个史的描述,形成了藩王意识浓郁的元曲学概念与兴衰认识。他对元曲学的研究从曲家著录、曲作著录、曲谱录存等基础文献的整理,到题材分类、评述风格、品评等上层理论的建构,不仅开拓视阈、自成体系,并且在客观上构成了元曲学研究的基石。
