Objective To explore the relationship between children’s autism and whole blood trace elements and blood lead levels. Methods Forty-five children with autism were enrolled in this study. Blood samples were collected for the determination of copper, zinc, calcium, iron and magnesium by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry and graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry for the determination of lead content. At the same time, , And 45 healthy children of the same age as the control group. The blood levels of trace elements and blood lead were measured. Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC) was used to evaluate the symptoms of the cases. Results The levels of blood zinc in children with autism were significantly lower than those in normal children (P <0.05). The levels of blood copper and blood lead in children with autism were significantly higher than those in normal controls (P <0.05). The blood iron, blood calcium, blood magnesium levels in the two groups showed no significant difference. There was a significant negative correlation between children’s autistic behavior scale and blood zinc level (r = -0.672, P <0.001), and a significant positive correlation with blood copper and blood lead levels (r = 0.513, P <0.01; , P <0.01). Conclusion The content of trace elements in whole blood of children with autism has obviously changed. Among them, the deficiency of blood zinc, the increase of blood copper and the increase of blood lead of toxic metals are correlated with the severity of symptoms in children with autism.
