Vascular endothelial cells are sources of relaxation and contractile factors called EDRF and EDCF. EDRF is an important mediator of vascular relaxation reaction. In addition to its vasodilating effect, EDRF has been found to inhibit platelet aggregation. It not only regulates the ability of vasoconstrictive drugs to increase blood pressure, but also regulates smooth muscle tone.
