一九三九年秋天,我到昆明上西南联合大学,才听说丁声树的名字。那时候丁先生的成名之作——《释否定词‘弗’‘不’》已经发表了五年了。《诗经‘式’字说》发表了也有三年了。一九五○年夏天语言研究所成立,我那年秋天进语言研究所,这才第一次见到丁先生。丁先生高个子,总在一米七五以上,脑门子(前额)也高。丁先生在中央研究院历史语言研究所的时候,先后参加过四个省的汉语方言调查:一九三五年十月湖南,一九三六年四月湖北,一九四○年三月云南,一九四一年十月四川。语言研究所成立后,一九五二年到一九五三年,丁先生主持语法小组的工作,《语法讲话》在《中国语文》连载。一九六一年出单行本,书名为《现代汉语语法讲话》。后来丁先生的工作逐渐转移到
