据说,如果没有百里奚,蹇叔也就不会登上历史舞台,只会平淡地度过自己的一生。历史上有很多这种人物,怀抱经天纬地的才识,却甘愿老死乡间,至多也就是为地方上积德行善,成为当地人生活的高标、楷模。但显然,这种人物是一种不得已。经过夏商周三代的演进,国家机器的运转已经非一人所能操控。他们可以成为历史的推手,但那完全需要因缘际会。这就是春秋战国至今的中国史,也是中国人在民主自由社会之前的史前史。
