Objective: To investigate the effects of high fat and high protein diet on oxidative stress in juvenile rats. Methods: Male Wistar rats aged 5-6 weeks were randomly divided into control group, high fat diet group and high protein diet group, fed with basic diet, high fat diet and high protein diet for 12 weeks. Serum total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD), catalase (CAT), malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) levels were measured at weeks 6 and 12. Results: Compared with the control group, body fat content increased significantly (P <0.05) and serum CAT activity decreased significantly (P <0.01) at the 6th week and the 12th week in the high fat diet group and the high protein diet group. Conclusion: Short-term and long-term high-fat or high-protein diet can increase body fat content in young rats and increase the level of oxidative stress in the body.
