In early summer 1899, Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy rode a small horse to Tula prison. He wore a white, plump shirt with a tie in his waist and a slimming underpants made from a farmhouse, a pair of straw sandals and a broad-brimmed yellow straw hat over his head. My young son, Joseph, was playing in the yard at the time. He walked over to Lev Nikolayevich and told him I was in the city and would soon be back. Lev Nikolayevich sat down on a bench near the entrance to the prison office, chatting with my son. I came back to town about 3 o’clock in the afternoon and met Lev Nikolayevich. I walked up to him and asked him what I could do for him and said that my youngest son was not asking People too. Lev Nikolayevich praised my son and his mother for having children’s education. He said he would like to know about the procedures for prisoners to meet with the prisoner. I told Lev Nikolayevich that it will arrive every Sunday at 10am
