Changing the Policy of a Single Trade Partner The economic development of Cuba in the 20th century suffered two major blows. First, the disintegration of the former Soviet Union in the socialist power of the 1990s made Cuba have to undergo a second technological update; secondly, the United States stepped up its efforts on Cuba Economic warfare. As a result, Cuba’s gross national product dropped by 35% between 1989 and 1993. Cuba has started to focus on developing diversified trading partners. So far, the trade volume between Cuba and Europe has been reduced to 46.4% from 87.7% in 1989, and it has established a trade partnership with every country in the Americas. Its trade volume has increased from 6% to 39.2%. Cuba has also begun to trade cooperation with more distant Asia. Now its trade volume with Asia has reached 16%. Cuba has gradually stepped out of a special economic period and started a new round of development.
