五通在厦门岛东北部,由泥金、东宅、浦口、下边、风头等自然村(俗称“社”)组成,隔海与同安、金门相对,村民基本上以渔、农为生。抗日战争爆发之前,日本侵略者已处心积虑地妄图武装占领厦门。1937年10月金门沦陷后,日军进一步加紧对厦门的侵略部署,经常派遣汽艇、侦察机到五通海域进行侦察和武装挑衅,日籍台湾浪人也乘机大肆活动,局势一天比一天紧张。1938年5月9日,日军侵厦指挥官宫田率领直接从佐世保和澎湖马公港集结的舰队,包括6艘巡洋舰、驱逐舰在内的大小舰船数十艘,运载陆、海、空军3000多人,
