Floods and droughts have always been the major natural disaster in Guangdong. According to records, on July 27, 1862, a typhoon storm surged in the Pearl River Delta, killing 100,000 people. In 1915, there were more than 100,000 deaths and injuries in western, northern and eastern rivers, 3.78 million people were victims of flooding, 7 days and nights of flooding in Guangzhou City; typhoon storm surge on August 2, 1922, with more than 70,000 deaths in the Chaoshan area; and the disaster victims in all the counties in 1943 in the drought-hit areas starving to death and fleeing famine and reducing the population by 3 million.
