The causes of multiple sclerosis (MS) are still unknown and are more common in developed countries than in developing countries. The data and geographical distribution of immigrants strongly suggest that MS is an exogenous and environmental cause of disease. As the age of immigrants affects the risk of MS in childhood or adolescence, childhood experiences such as infection may be related to the cause. The authors examined the incidence of antibodies to various viruses and the incidence of hepatitis B virus surface antigen in youth groups with high and low incidence of MS. Also reviewed the World Health Organization (WHO) 1977
