W·H·塔夫脱是美国第27届总统,任职于1909年至1912年。据载,塔夫脱十分仰慕中国文化。当时我国驻美公使张荫棠(有人疑为施肇基)将著名画家王石谷、戴醇的山水真迹赠之,塔氏大喜过望,遂悬于书房,“朝夕晤对”。并赞誉:中国画“其意境往往高于尘俗,令人如置身另一世界中”。值得一提的是,塔夫脱还在他居住的后院里,饲养了十余只我国特产的泰和鸡,据传也为某公使所赠。这种鸡的赭冠巨大,红眼绿耳,羽毛洁白无瑕,嘴与爪俱为黑色。物以稀为贵,塔氏每日以谷粒亲自饲之,而美国一电影公司还将其摄为新闻片,让世人一睹其风采。
