19世纪中期以后,外国殖民势力在中国迅猛扩张,海外航运业在我国沿海疯狂挤占市场。烟台作为开放口岸,不仅洋货,就连国产土杂品及旅客,也由外籍轮船、帆船发送,导致中国传统帆船贸易深受摧残,衰败局面令业内人士焦虑痛惜,热切盼望能有中国轮船与之抗衡,转变中国海运业颓势。1873年,烟台人终于看到一艘龙旗飘扬的华籍轮船!这艘隶属上海轮船招商局的“伊敦”
