The distribution of focal depths of the Southern California earthquake shows that the area with schist bases is shallower than the depth of the largest focal depths of other types of basement rocks (with depths of 4 to 10 km). Compared to other basement rock minerals, the main mineral in the schist is required to be plasticized at a lower temperature and therefore at a lower depth. The horizontal variation of lithology will control the range (or even magnitude) of potential seismic focal depths in the future. This depth range can be determined by the depth of the current background seismicity.
