“文艺”一词是中国在现代性进程中用古代以“文”为核心的艺术体系对接西方以“艺”为核心的艺术体系而产生出来的语汇。在这一对接过程的造词中，出现了“雅艺”、“美术”、“艺术”和“文艺”。“文艺”一词有两种含义，一是艺术体系总称，二是文学这一艺术，由此产生第三义，即文学之学又成了文艺学。“文艺”一词是互动的产物，但“文艺”与“艺术”作为两套语汇同时存在，又因对方的存在而变换着语义。
